Details:
The Gregorian chant imposed by Charlemagne developed into two dialects, those of eastern and western Europe. This division is established by the analysis of small melodic variants, the selection of alleluia verses, and the order of the reponsories of Holy Week. The liturgical division corresponds to cultural and linguistic divisions which become evident in the mid ninth century after the treaty of Verdun in 843 that divided the Carolingian Empire.
